Trent should go, but as a player to bring on when England need a goal, or against weaker opposition that pack their own box and there needs to be a pinpoint crosser on the pitch for England to unlock the defence. Trent should not start against big teams. 5 full backs should be Chillwell and Shaw, and then on the right: Walker the no 1 choice and best defensively, James is your 'all rounder', and Trent is your attacking.

I don't think Southgate will take Trent either. I think it will be a big mistake if he doesn't as it's usually teams with better attacking flair that win tournaments. I think picking Walker, Trippier and James will be the risk adverse option, picking players who are decent going forward and defending but not exceptional. Plus Walker is prone to an erratic square pass despite his age and I'm not sure any of them will easily manage against Mbappe, Ronaldo et al anyway.

Have to pick TAA not because he is the best or even better than most of the 4, but because he offers a better attacking threat if needed.

I know Trent can pass a ball very well, but why is everybody saying he's the most talented right back? He can't mark, he can barely tackle, he only knows how to move as a RB in Klopp's system - he looks lost whenever he plays for England. The only things he is exceptional at are passing and vision. That's not a talented right back for me - a talented player, sure, but if you compare him to James (which I think we'll be doing a lot over the next 10 years...), he's not as strong, not as quick, not as switched on in defence, not as efficient in the tackle, has perhaps a marginally better delivery, and can pick a pass better. I know which one I'd rather have.

As a former center back, Carragher is being blinded by his Liverpool bias if he doesn't see the defensive liability that Trent has been in recent times. One thing to bare in mind, technical assists alone aren’t the only key factor: sometimes a key pass doesn’t mean an assist. TAA is the best attacking fullback in the squad. However, Trippier is a very quality RB that’s been phenomenal this season. Him and Walker know each other in those rolls they played in the World Cup. Walker’s defensive game isn’t perfect but has improved. I think those two have to go. It then comes down to TAA, James or WB.

Nice assist by TAA to Marco Asensio, and to finish it off with not marking Vinicius for the final goal. So much for "best right back" LMAO. Also Trippier has 6 assists in 19 appearances this season, and TAA has 6 in 35. Not sure how Carragher can justify his abysmal stats and form this season.

@Shpongle TAA was helped by the fact your midfield area is full of workhouses, central midfielders like Henderso, Fabinho, Milner are well-known for their tenacity instead of their ability with the ball (no disrespect as i think the former 2 are world class at what theyre doing), now Klopp has decided to change the system by adding Thiago, a midfield general who is more known as his ability to pass and dictating the game instead of chasing opponent down, no wonder TAA suffers as no more CM to cover acres of space left behind him after he wandered into the oppo area.

TAA is overrated as RB. He can't defend well enough. If however he changed his position to something more similar to how Beckham played and had less responsibility to defend then I can see him going on to be a much better player.

It’s harsh on TAA but probs fair. He hasn’t adjusted his game at all to VVD not being there to clear up his mess. And it happens to a lot of Wing Backs. Look at Luke Shaw, so often was letting crosses come in and his Centre Backs, low on confidence weren’t dealing with them. Shaw tho has upped his game, stopped letting so many crosses come in. Trents a lot younger and will develop but right now we can afford to play both Shaw and Trent in the same game as part of a 4. We need one of those Backs to be a better defender

Trent will be part of the squad but Walker will definitely start. The LB (Shaw or Chilwell) will be the one bombing forward so the RB will need to be more disciplined. Plus Walker has a good relationship with Stones on the right side of defence and also Foden/Sterling who might be playing RW.

I think this whole charade... goes down to the manager's style of play... if he has a defensive or neutral type of play... then Trent isnt suitable... otherwise he'll be nuts to leave him
